The Journey and creation of the name…

• 2019 – In Melbourne, during the early waves of COVID, Jem began dabbling in DJing while also launching her art business, Spirit Hugs Artwork. With time and space to explore passion projects, both music and visual art became a lifeline.

• The name Spirit Hugs was born from that chapter — a reminder that reconnecting with creativity had brought life and spirit back after years of feeling lost. And during lockdowns, with physical hugs off the table, Spirit Hugs became a symbolic offering — warmth and connection, from a distance.

• Post-COVID – After moving back to Darwin, DJing became more regular. But as the music evolved — heavier, more grounded, more raw — Jem felt the name Spirit Hugs didn’t quite fit her sound anymore. It was time to separate her creative worlds.

• In true cheeky Gemini form, she rebranded her DJ alias to Spirit Jugs — a nod to not taking life too seriously, to body confidence, and to her long-standing appreciation for boobs (both hers and others).

• But as she began to hone her sound and step more seriously into her craft, a new era called. She dropped the Jugs (and politely declined going with Spirit Nips) — and simply became Spirit.

• The name now reflects a wiser, grounded, and more evolved version of the artist — still playful, still powerful, but focused and full of purpose.

Alongside music, Spirit works in the mental health space — running creative art and music programs that center healing, expression, and connection. Every set she plays and every space she holds is a reflection of that same mission: to connect, to move, and to lift the spirit.
